AFFORDABLE SENIORS HOUSING IDEAS DESIGN COMPETITION

Architects from both Canada and the United States competed in an International Affordable Seniors Housing Ideas Design Competition hosted by ASHRA at the project’s 2009 Atlantic Seniors Housing Needs Conference, held May 27 – 29, 2009 at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax.

The competition was a contest of open ideas with the aim of showcasing these concepts through new and innovative, affordable seniors housing design. Competition entrants included both professional and student architects familiar with the field.  Submissions were received from across  Canada –  as far west as British Columbia and as far east as Newfoundland – as well as from the United States.

The judging panel was led by Professor Victor Regnier, FAIA Professor B.S. Engineering, B. Arch, Kansas State University, M. Arch, University of Southern California. Professor Regnier has directed 20 research projects dealing with the social and behavioral impact of the environment on older people, children, and the homeless.  His design findings have been presented at over 160 professional and scientific conferences, as well as more than 60 university symposia.

The First Place prize of $5,000 was awarded to Burka Architects of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  The design, called "GENERATIONS LIVING", was described by the judges as an exceptional mixed-used community with green-filled atriums and a focus on wellness and affordability for older persons. Thank you to all who participated!
